Slaughterman Job Description

The Bay Area Ranchers Cooperative is opening a multi species mobile slaughter unit.  The unit will process up to 15 beef equivalents a day with a small team.  The Butcher’s primary responsibilities are the humane handling and slaughter of beef, veal, pork, lamb and goats.  Responsible for achieving goals set by the General Manager on quality and efficiency.  Animal welfare is a core value and the Butcher is responsible for ensuring animal welfare practices are followed.  

Responsibilities:

  • Unload and segregate live animals in a humane manner and prepare for entering the harvest floor.
  • Use of knives, meat saws, stunners and other equipment to perform harvest in compliance with animal welfare standards. 
  • Drain blood, cut, trim, skin and wash viscera of slaughtered animals to separate edible portions from offal. 
  • Sever or remove parts of the animal’s heads or skulls, trim head meat. 
  • Skin animals using knives, hand saws and other powered equipment. 
  • Trim carcasses to ensure they are free of contaminants.
  • Prepare and hoist carcasses for refrigeration and transport.
  • Follow all safety measures, immediately report any safety concerns, violations and incidents to the manager. 
  • Perform all work in compliance with company Handbook, Sanitation SOP, and USDA/HACCP animal handling and sanitation rules. 
  • Clean and sanitize work spaces, equipment and tools. 

Requirements/physical demands:

  • Basic tool and machine maintenance experience
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Familiar with USDA standards
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs without assistance and lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Stand for prolonged periods of time, have a full range of motion to perform rapid repetitive twisting and working with arms above shoulder level.
  • Flexible work schedule with the ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of work temperatures warm, hot, humid, cold, and wet or with slippery surfaces at varied heights in and around moving equipment and parts.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with and handling large and small livestock including cows, sheep, goats and pigs in confined spaces.
  • At least 1 year experience working with hooks and knives.
  • Firearms safety certification or ability to acquire a license to operate a firearm

Delivery Driver Job Description

The Bay Area Ranchers Cooperative is a multi species mobile slaughter unit that will locally harvest beef,  pork, lamb and goats using humane handling and animal welfare practices.  The Delivery Driver will be responsible for transporting animal carcasses  to designated cut and wrap facilities in the local Bay Area.   

Responsibilities:

  • Follow the best practices for safety, both on the road and while loading or unloading carcasses for transport
  • Load and unload carcasses into our refrigerated truck for daily transport/delivery.
  • Communicating with Business Manager, Harvest Manager and other team members to ensure timely deliveries.
  •  
  • Performing basic truck maintenance; i.e. fueling vehicle, tire pressure checks, oil checks, washing exterior and interior.
  • Ensure proper USDA documentation is completed for delivery.
  • Follow all safety measures, immediately report any safety concerns, violations and incidents to the manager. 
  • Perform all work in compliance with company Handbook, Sanitation SOP, and USDA/HACCP animal handling and sanitation rules. 
  • Clean and sanitize work spaces, equipment and tools.
  • Assist with moving/driving animals in pens, chutes and mobile slaughter unit.

Requirements/physical demands:

  • A valid California driver’s license and a clean DMV driving record to be provided at time of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and pass a drug test.
  • Basic tool and machine maintenance experience desired but not required.
  • Familiarity with using navigation systems
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Ability to sit for long periods, excellent vision and eye-hand coordination to stay safe while driving.
  • Familiar with USDA standards preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs without assistance and lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
